Estrogen Dominance

Both progesterone and estrogen are vital to the life and well-being of every woman. The two hormones exist in a delicate balance that can have dramatic effect on one's health. The amount of these hormones the body produces from day to day and month to month can vary depending on a whole host of factors such as stress, nutrition, and exercise.

Contrary to prevailing opinion, it is actually a decrease in progesterone production by the ovaries that plays a major role in the many manifestations of hormone imbalance. This decline occurs any time ovulation is suppressed (hysterectomy, menopause, and even birth control. Unfortunately, many of the symptoms related to hormone imbalance are often wrongly attributed to estrogen deficiency rather than estrogen dominance. Usually these are treated by allopathic medicine with even more estrogens.

It has become apparent that a large number of women could benefit from the use of supplemental natural progesterone. It is very effective in dealing with the symptoms of menstrual irregularity, cramping, miscarriages, infertility, fibrocystic disease, endometriosis, hot flashes, night sweats, migraines, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, blood clots, osteoporosis, and more.

Over the past 25 years of investigation in the area of hormone imbalance, the authors found that women who experience the uncomfortable symptoms associated with PMS through post-menopause, may actually be suffering due to estrogen dominance in combination with progesterone deficiency - not estrogen deficiency as they are most often told. True, estrogen does decline, however, progesterone is lower than estrogen in most cases when a woman becomes symptomatic, (such as: exercise-induced amenorrhea, postpartum depression, PMS, luteal phase defects inducing first trimester miscarriages and biological, surgical, or chemically-induced menopause).

Unfortunately, instead of recommending a bio-identical progesterone to correct these imbalances, doctors typically prescribe synthetic hormones such as Premarin (Pregnant Mares Urine, containing powerful estrogens), with or without a progestin, (synthetic progesterone). The body cannot properly utilize either of these synthetic hormonal substances. These factors may account for uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, weight gain, the risk of blood clots, and years down the road, the possibility of benign or malignant cell proliferation in the breast, uterine, ovarian, and/or cervical organs.

It is suggested that you investigate this further through the information referenced in several informative books, including “The Estrogen Alternative (A Guide to Natural Hormone Balance”, 4th Edition, by Raquel Martin and Judi Gerstung, DC, (see pages 17, 24, 37-43, 48, 52-58, 66-67, 71-72, 90, 139, 142, 152 & 207) and “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause” by Dr. John R. Lee, MD, and/or by consulting with a health care practitioner educated in safe, natural alternatives.
